RESULTS: US Women’s Hockey Team & Road Ahead

The USA Women’s team won their first game in a decisive 3-1 victory over Finland this morning. Hilary Knight had a goal and an assist and led the team in shots with 8. Kelli Stack and Alex Carpenter were the other two goal scorers, Megan Bozek and Anne Schleper each had assists.

The defense played well in front of Jessie Vetter who stood tall allowing 1 goal on the 15 shots she faced, ending with a 0.933 save percentage. Meanwhile, the US women peppered Finland’s Noora Raty with 43 shots. Raty made 40 saves ending with a 0.930 save percentage.

Canada dominated Switzerland in the only other game played today, winning 5-0 and notching a shorthanded goal. The game on Wednesday between USA and Canada should be the highlight game of Group A play.

The USA Woman’s team is now 6-0-0 all-time against Finland in Olympic games. They have only played Switzerland once in 2006, winning 6-0. Against Canada they are 2-2-0, most recently being shut out in the 2010 Gold Medal game.
